Regulars included Don Knotts as his cousin Barney Fife, the zealous but inept deputy sheriff, six-year old Ronny Howard as Opie, Andy's son; Frances Bavier as Andy's aunt, Bee Taylor, who lived in and helped care for Opie. The townspeople included Jim Nabors as Gomer Pyle, gas pump jockey; Howard McNear as Floyd Lawson, the barber; Paul Hartman as Emmet Clark, a handyman,: Jack Dodson as Howard Sprague, the town clerk; Elinor Donahue as Elly Walker, drugstore salesclerk, Betty Lynn as Thelma Lou, Barney's girlfriend; Aneta Corsaut as schoolteacher Helen Crump, Andy's girlfriend; and Hal smith as Otis Campbell, the town drunk.
